As a Sicangu Lakota whose grandfather was forcibly assimilated, I have used art to reconnect with my ancestors, and as an outlet when I am struggling. This art was inspired by the story of Turtle Island: that our homeland was formed on the back of a giant turtle. We have lost so many languages that tell us the names and stories of this land - but we have not lost the understanding that we are not defined by our colonizer, and luckily so much indigenous wisdom remains.
The message ?no one is illegal on stolen land built with stolen hands? is a clear statement that colonial geography is temporary, and that indigenous people of North, Central and South America all belong here.
