Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary is a non-profit, environmentally friendly sanctuary for any captive bred big cats, where they will be protected and prosper for the rest of their lives.
One of Panthera Africa's main purposes is to be an educational platform to create awareness about conditions big cats face in captivity, and how animal welfare and enrichment play a vital role in giving them the best life possible.
Panthera Africa currently cares for 28 big cats that have been rescued from breeding facilities, circuses, and the pet trade. The sanctuary is currently under lock down and has been for over 4 months. When the lock down began they were forced to close to the public. The staff continues striving to provide the best care possible for these special animals, but they can't manage without food for the animals. Usually, the sanctuary's volunteer program and the educational visits they host help to raise funds towards our total food bill, but that income was lost when the lock down began. There is no telling when the sanctuary will be able to reopen their doors to the public.

Zakara- Zakara was brought to Panthera Africa with her sister Jade, as they had been living together at their previous home. Zakara was named by Liz and Cat, the founders of Panthera Africa, meaning of inspiration, hope, and guidance. Although she had a rough start to her life, she has a beautiful soul, and the most stunning eyes that seem to see right through you. She is quite a playful girl and loves to get enrichment. As Zakara?s date of birth is unknown, she was given the birthday of August 10th ? International Lion Day.

Baguira- Baguira was born in a zoo in Argentina and sold to a circus at a very young age. Forced to live in a cage for eight years, never knowing the feel of grass underneath her paws or the color of the sky overhead. At the time of here rescue she weighed a mere 80 kg. She was rescued by Panthera Africa, and made a long 83 hour journey to her new home in South Africa. Today she is a healthy 160 kg beautiful lioness.

Sheeba- He was originally bred for the purpose of being hunted in captivity. He was declawed by his owners to make him "easier to handle". This has caused arthritis and other long term health issues, and prevents him from climbing trees like leopards naturally love to do. On top of all of this, Sheeba was fed to obesity on purpose to stretch his skin so it would be worth more money after he was shot.
It has taken a lot of work, care and love to make Sheeba lighter, healthier and happier but he is so worth it! He still doesn?t have claws, and he has some excess skin after the weight loss, but every day we see him becoming braver and cheekier! He loves to make us laugh with his many facial expressions.

Obi- He was raised by the founders of Panthera Africa, Cathrine Nyquist and Lizaene Cornwall, when they worked at a previous project. He was raised alongside his brother Oliver. One day the owners told them it was time for the lions to return to the farm where they were born. The two ladies were devastated by the thought of the farm's connection to the canned hunting industry, and it tore their world apart. They created Panthera Africa and set off to rescue the two lions. Obi was found emaciated and barely able to walk. Today the two lions live together in a spacious enclosure where they can just be lions! Obi is featured on the front of the T-shirt.
