This power imbalance also makes it difficult for many sex workers to require partners to use condoms in each sexual encounter. Global data demonstrates that female sex workers are 26 times more likely to be living with HIV compared to the general population of women and about 33% of sex workers are unaware of their HIV status. Stigma and criminalization has led to unsafe and unstable living conditions.
