On October 18, 2021, eight firefighters from Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue?now known as the Snohomish 8?were placed on indefinite unpaid leave for refusing to comply with Washington State?s COVID-19 vaccine mandate.
We are those eight firefighters.
We were and remain devoted first responders with more than 100 years of combined service to our community. We stood firm in our faith, our conscience, and our constitutional rights. The mandate forced us to choose between our deeply held beliefs and our livelihoods. We chose faith.
Since that day, we have fought in court?not only to defend our own reputations, but to stand up for every firefighter, first responder, and public employee who should never be forced to violate their beliefs to keep their jobs.
In April 2025, we brought our case before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. This past week (September 2, 2025), a three-judge panel issued an opinion that ignored key principles of religious freedom and employment law. Instead of correcting the injustice we endured, it upheld it. But our fight is not over.
Now more than ever, we are preparing for the next stage. That means asking the full Ninth Circuit to rehear our case and, if necessary, seeking review at the Supreme Court of the United States. These appeals are critical not only for us but for countless others across Washington and the nation who faced the same ultimatum: violate your beliefs or lose your job.
Legal battles of this size are long, complex, and costly. Every dollar raised from this apparel campaign goes directly into our legal fund. These funds cover attorney fees, court costs, expert preparation, and the continued advocacy that this fight requires.
We created these designs to represent who we are and the truth we stand on.
?Divinely Led. Divinely Protected.?
- The firefighter standing before the flag represents the oath we swore to protect our community.
- The crossed axes symbolize the calling of our profession.
- The red Maltese crosses honor both our service and the courage of those who stood with us.
- The date, October 18, 2021, marks the day we took our stand.
- The number 8 stands for each one of us who refused to back down.
- And the cross reminds us that we are not walking this road alone.
By purchasing and wearing this apparel, you are helping us continue this fight. You are standing with us in faith, courage, and solidarity. You are also sending a message that no firefighter, no public servant, and no American should ever be forced to surrender their faith in order to serve.
We hope you will wear your shirt or sweatshirt with pride, knowing that it represents more than just a story in Snohomish County. It represents a stand for freedom, one that echoes across Washington State and throughout the nation.
Thank you for supporting the Snohomish 8.
We are Divinely Led. Divinely Protected. And we are not backing down.
