How Many Cats Live at Florida Southern College?
Approximately 30 cats currently live around campus. The number fluctuates occasionally if one passes away and/or if another moves in, but we typically have 30-35 at any given time.
Do They All Have Names?
Yes! Each and every cat has their own name and unique personality. The cats are named by our Care Team members, donors who sponsor their TNR surgeries, or through naming contests.
What is TNR?
TNR is a process in which feral cats are humanely trapped, sterilized, and returned to their communities where they are monitored and cared for by caretakers. It is the only method proven to reduce and control the stray and feral cat population. TNR is the most humane option as well.
What Happens if a New Cat Shows Up?
New cats who become part of the colony are trapped, spayed, neutered, and vaccinated. The Care Team does its due diligence in ensuring a cat hasn't simply wandered too far from its home. Friendly, non-feral cats are placed in foster homes and adopted out.
Can I Pet the Cats?
Our cats are feral, meaning they are unsocialized and generally afraid of humans. Many of them don't want to be approached. Please give them their space and admire them from a comfortable distance. Some cats, including Dexter, Carrot, and Gilbert, typically enjoy receiving attention from students, faculty/staff, and visitors.
Can I feed the Cats?
Please do not feed the cats! Several stations are fed on plates to avoid attracting raccoons and coyotes. Other cats have special dietary needs, so we want to minimize their exposure to other foods. If a cat doesn't eat at dinnertime, our team has to determine if they are sick or simply filled up on snacks/extra meals.
You can help feed the cats by donating their favorite foods, which can be found on our Amazon Wishlist or Target Registry.
