Meridian Township is made up of over 25% wetlands, so we take great care in conserving these areas and educating others on how to do the same. Vernal pools are smaller, temporary wetlands, which often are not delineated as official wetlands. Because of this, they are not afforded the same protections, and can be developed on or degraded through disturbance. Lack of awareness is how these precious ecosystems get looked over, so we are here to help spread the good word! We want everyone to get as excited as we do when spring rolls around, the wood frogs start calling, and the fairy shrimp start hatching! So wear your support and conserve these incredibly diverse areas with the Meridian Conservation Corps!
Please visit our page at www.meridian.mi.us/MCC to see how you can learn more and become involved in protecting vernal pools in Meridian Township. The Michigan Vernal Pools Partnership is performing research, outreach and education statewide, visit them at https://mivernalpools.com/index.html for more information. Thank you to Alex Skinner for his original Fairy Shrimp and Blue-spotted Salamander artwork. Any proceeds will go toward acquiring supplies to monitor vernal pools in the Township.
