Trout Creek is a major tributary of the Deschutes River and the largest producer of wild steelhead in the Deschutes Basin. It is estimated that 20-30% of all wild steelhead that returns to the Deschutes River make their way into Trout Creek to complete their spawning cycle.
Like many western rivers, Trout Creek is severely impacted by irrigation withdrawals, resulting in extremely low flows and the degradation of critical habitat needed for resident and migratory fish.
Despite these challenges, the Deschutes River Conservancy has established unique water-sharing solutions with local irrigators to keep more water instream when it?s most needed. In collaboration with on-the-ground restoration being conducted by partners, these agreements are a pivotal step in the right direction for ensuring the future of Deschutes River wild steelhead.
