? Log In & Lock In: Supporting Student Readers
Sometimes the best ideas happen completely by accident.
During class, I said something to my students that was apparently heard a little differently than I intended. One of my 7th grade students came up with the phrase ?Log In & Lock In,? and we immediately loved it. What started as a funny classroom moment turned into a student-created slogan?and now we're running with it!
I created a ?Log In & Lock In? shirt featuring our student?s original slogan as a way to celebrate that idea and raise money for something that directly benefits our students.
? What is the INGDA Reading Initiative?
As a 7th Grade ELA teacher at Indiana Gateway Digital Academy (INGDA), I am launching a reading initiative designed to help students build stronger reading habits, improve fluency and comprehension, and develop a genuine love of reading.
Because we are a virtual school, we are finding creative ways to make reading feel social, engaging, and rewarding?even when students aren't sitting together in the same physical library.
Students will:
- ? Choose books they are genuinely interested in reading through our K12 online library
- ? Participate in weekly virtual book tastings to discover new books and genres
- ? Set aside time for independent reading
- ? Practice reading skills such as inference, vocabulary, theme, comprehension, and using text evidence
- ? Track their reading and reflect on their growth
- ?? Complete short virtual reading tickets after reading to earn entries into our reading raffle
Our goal is simple: READ MORE. READ BETTER. KNOW YOUR GROWTH.
We want students to develop a consistent reading habit rather than simply trying to see who can read the most books. The focus is on helping every student find books they enjoy, read regularly, and become a more confident and capable reader.
?? Where do the fundraiser proceeds go?
100% of the proceeds from these shirts will be used to purchase prizes for our student reading raffle.
We are also reaching out to businesses and organizations throughout Indiana to ask for donated tickets, gift cards, coupons, experiences, and other prizes.
Students earn raffle entries by reading for at least 15 minutes and completing a short reading reflection. Throughout the school year, we'll randomly select winners from eligible entries.
Because INGDA serves students across Indiana, we are also working to connect students with prizes from businesses and organizations in their own communities whenever possible.
The goal isn't to pay students to read. Instead, the prizes are a fun way to celebrate students for building a habit that will benefit them far beyond the classroom.
And we love that this entire idea started with a student's words.
A student created the slogan.
We're turning that classroom moment into something positive.
And our community is helping us celebrate student reading.
So when you wear ?Log In & Lock In,? you're not just wearing a funny classroom moment?you?re helping put books, experiences, and a little extra excitement into the hands of student readers. ???
Log in. Lock in. Read on.
