About the Instruments
The inspiration for this design comes from the 94-year history of anemometer usage at the Mount Washington Observatory! Anemometers are research instruments that help scientists collect the speed of the wind.
The anemometers featured on this shirt include:
- a RM Young propeller anemometer, the type of propeller anemometer used on our summit and in our Mesonet system. This instrument has a rate-of-rotation conversion for windspeed.
- a pitot-static tube anemometer, an instrument traditionally utilized on aircraft as a speedometer for pilots. This instrument works on a system of pressure differentials to determine windspeed.
- a three-cup anemometer, a formerly used tool at the Mount Washington Observatory, has been retired due to its ineffectiveness in icing conditions. This instrument has a rate-of-rotation conversion for windspeed. Fun fact: our retired three-cup anemometer is our Christmas tree topper on the summit!
- and a Heated No. 2 anemometer, the model that recorded our famous 231 MPH! This instrument has a rate-of-rotation conversion and clicks every three turns, adding an audio element to the observation, making the turns easier to track.

Climate Education at the Mount Washington Observatory
Climate education is one of our foundational pillars at the Mount Washington Observatory. But what is the difference between climate and weather?
Think of both climate and weather as being your closet. Weather is represented by the outfit you selected to wear today (the "now" changes daily). Climate is represented by the staple items you hold onto even when seasons change because you know you'll need them next year (long-term collection of data requiring a minimum of 30 years of data). We hope your "Anemometers" shirt becomes one of these climate staples in your closet!
The Mount Washington Observatory is a private, nonprofit, member-supported institution with a mission to advance understanding of the natural systems that create Earth's weather and climate. It serves this mission by maintaining a weather station on the summit of Mount Washington, performing weather and climate research, and conducting innovative science education programs.
