TNR is a humane, non-lethal strategy for managing community cat populations. Instead of the "catch and kill" cycles of the past?which actually fail due to the "vacuum effect"?TNR creates a stable, healthy population.
- Population Control: It immediately stops the cycle of reproduction. One female cat can have up to three litters a year; TNR puts a permanent "stop" on those numbers.
- Improved Welfare: Sterilized cats are less likely to roam, fight, or sustain injuries. Neutered males lose the urge to spray (scent-mark) and fight for mates, leading to a quieter, more peaceful neighborhood.
- The Vacuum Effect Prevention: When cats are simply removed from an area, new, unsterilized cats move in to take advantage of the food source. TNR keeps "fixed" cats in place to guard the territory without adding to the population.
- Public Health: Most TNR programs include a rabies vaccination, creating a "buffer zone" of vaccinated animals between wildlife and humans.
