A footprint acts as evidence that a living creature existed, moved through this world, and left a trace of themselves behind.

This footprint belonged to an orangutan named Elok.

But this footprint tells many stories.

It tells the story of an individual orangutan, one with their own history, personality, challenges, and future. It reminds us that orangutans are not simply a species or a number. They are individuals, each with a life of their own.

And Elok?s footprint is also a reminder of something bigger: the responsibility we have to make sure there are forests left for the orangutans who come after him.

Within this footprint are the islands of Sumatra and Borneo, the only two islands on Earth where orangutans still exist in the wild.

One of those islands is burning.

Kalimantan, the Indonesian side of Borneo, is currently facing intense forest fires. Tens of thousands of hectares of land have burned across Kalimantan in 2026, with fires still actively spreading. These fires threaten forests, wildlife, communities, and some of the last remaining habitat of wild orangutans.

The forest is burning now.

Orangutan habitat is being lost now.

And organizations on the ground are working now to fight the fires, protect remaining habitat, and rescue and relocate orangutans affected by them.
