Chicago Black-crowned Night-Heron (BCNH) Project supports the conservation and recovery of this Illinois? state-endangered species. The herons nesting in Chicago?s Lincoln Park Zoo comprise the last large successful breeding population in Illinois. Research led by University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with Lincoln Park Zoo and Illinois Department of Natural Resources is studying the herons? movements and testing methods to encourage selection of new nesting sites. Meanwhile, the Zoo continues studying the urban environment?s impact on these herons. By continuing to breed in Illinois despite myriad challenges, including continued wetland habitat loss, this adaptable bird epitomizes tenacity. The Black-crowned Night-Heron calls upon us to work together to restore nature, while we honor and celebrate its resilience. This volunteer project builds public awareness and engagement with BCNH and this species' conservation needs through communications, collaborations and programming. All proceeds from this sale go to Illinois Audubon Society to support ongoing BCNH research and conservation efforts.
