This shirt commemorates the Second Battle of Fort Wagner, which was fought on July 18, 1863, during the American Civil War. The 54th Mass Infantry (Movie Glory) distinguished themselves through their gallant and brave effort to capture the fort. Col Robert Gould Shaw and SGT William Carney, who was the first African American recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
The current project of the Col Robert Gould Shaw Camp 54 is to restore a Civil War Veteran Cemetery, which has been vandalized and subjected to years of neglect, and to erect a historical plaque. Past projects include a memorial to the first African-American Civil War US Army nurse, Susie Taylor, in Boston.
