In June 2010, I had just moved across the country from California to Wisconsin, preparing to start college and build a new life. At the same time, I was unknowingly battling the symptoms of type 1 diabetes. I went months without a diagnosis?pushing through exhaustion and illness?until my body could no longer keep up.
At 19 years old, everything changed. Instead of focusing on school and independence, I was learning how to manage a lifelong autoimmune disease. Overnight, my world became blood sugar checks, insulin injections, and constant decision-making?all while trying to navigate adulthood in a new state, far from home.
Living with T1D has never been just about insulin. Over the years, I?ve faced complications that have tested me physically and emotionally, including fertility struggles, gastroparesis, and diabetic retinopathy. These challenges are a reminder that T1D affects every system in the body and touches every part of life. It?s relentless?and there is still no cure.
Just a few weeks ago, I completed my 4th Breakthrough T1D Ride, riding 100 miles to raise awareness and funding for type 1 diabetes research. Now, I?m continuing that journey by taking part in my 5th Breakthrough T1D Walk.
I ride. I walk. I advocate.
Because I know firsthand the daily challenges that come with type 1 diabetes. I know the fear of complications, the exhaustion of constant decision-making, and the hope that comes with every new research breakthrough. Research has already transformed the lives of people living with T1D, and continued breakthroughs bring us closer to better treatments, prevention, and ultimately, a cure.
On October 3rd, I?ll be joining the Breakthrough T1D Walk in Stevens Point alongside other families, friends, and supporters who believe that no one should have to face this disease alone. Every step represents resilience, hope, and the belief that together we can create a future without type 1 diabetes.
Breakthrough T1D is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes research and advocacy. Their work helps make everyday life with T1D safer and more manageable while relentlessly pushing toward cures?but none of it happens without support.
That?s why I?m asking for yours.
No donation is too small. Every dollar helps fund life-changing research, supports families living with T1D, and moves us one step closer to a world without this disease.
Thank you for supporting my ride, my walk, my story, and the future of everyone affected by type 1 diabetes.
