Members and friends of the Feminist Bird Club are raising funds for on-the-ground essential aid for those in Western North Carolina affected by the massive devastation of Hurricane Helene. Catastrophic flooding, downed trees, and mudslides have impacted the communities and environment on a monumental scale. Many have lost homes and have limited access to necessary resources, such as water, food, medication, etc. BeLoved Asheville is doing the work to provide necessary support to these communities in real, tangible ways?hiking into impacted areas without road access to bring life-saving supplies to those who need them, doing well-checks on seniors, setting up non-potable water to allow residents to flush toilets, bringing in truckloads of food, water and other supplies to impacted areas, and so much more.
During the peak of the storm, the Swannanoa River rose to a terrifying 26.1 feet, more than ten feet above major flood stage. It enveloped whole homes and towns, rearranged the landscape and left thick, toxic mud in its wake. After the floodwaters began to recede and the reality of the destruction came to light, Casey Girard noticed a Great Blue Heron returning to the river and felt like everything would be okay. They were inspired to create this image and message of strength for this campaign. Let it be a symbol of hope and resilience as we contribute to supporting the ongoing need of these communities.

Casey Girard is an illustrator, naturalist, and educator. Casey lives in Asheville along the Swannanoa river. They and their family are working to restore the land to native plants that support the local ecosystem. Their work and personal life reflect their twin passions of art and science, and between balancing work and motherhood, they travel to preserved nature spaces for community science, education, and inspiration.
When not creating art they spend time educating others through volunteer bird walks. Recently they have been drawing a series of Black Birders, Latino Conservationists, and other under-represented Naturalists to promote their outstanding environmental conservation work.
