This design by Native Hawaiian (Kanaka ??iwi) interdisciplinary artist, Lehuauakea, draws from quilt-inspired traditions and Native Hawaiian appliqu?, centering an eight-part symmetrical ?ulu (breadfruit) motif. The ?ulu holds deep cultural significance across Pacific Islander and Asian communities. In Native Hawaiian traditions, it is both a staple food and a sacred symbol, sometimes embodying k?ne (masculine) energy, sometimes wahine (feminine), and often something more fluid in between.
Surrounding the central motif is a layered patchwork of patterns that blend traditional and contemporary influences. These elements represent protection, connection, and belonging, coming together like a quilt stitched across generations.
The composition is inspired by communal quilting spaces where aunties, uncles, and chosen family gather to create, share stories, and build something meaningful together. It reflects care, continuity, and the quiet power of collective making.
Designed with a rich maroon base in mind, this piece also translates beautifully across a range of colors, making it a versatile addition to any wardrobe while carrying a story rooted in culture and community.
