In 2017, during one of my first shifts working at a summer job for an education non-profit, I decided I wanted to start a scholarship for high school students wanting to attend post-secondary education. There was no such award, nothing to acknowledge those who have experienced these hardships.
Specifically, this scholarship is for students who are struggling or have struggled with their mental health as well as mental health advocates. This scholarship is largely funded by the community (people like you!) to give back to the community (students). Many mental health services (private counselling, some psychiatric services and medication), may not be fully covered, and this award is to provide students with some financial and emotional encouragement to continue their educational journey. Each year, one student is awarded $1000.00 to support their education, and they are given the opportunity to share their story if they?d like. In 2018, we had 77 students apply, the largest amount EVER for an award in its inaugural year! I read each application and essay (it took a very long time!), and every single student brought me to tears. For some, it was their first opportunity they felt comfortable to share their struggles, and others shared how they supported their friends and family members who are struggling. I want to keep the scholarship going, and I want it to grow, to impact as many lives as possible. 100% of all proceeds will go directly to the scholarship fund.
Thank you very much for your support
