I?ve been helping animals for as long as I can remember. The sick ones, the scared ones, the overlooked ones, the ones other people might consider ?too much.? But Princess gave that part of my heart a name: None Left Behind.
Princess was on the euthanasia list at a kill shelter.
She had been surrendered by her owner, reportedly because of gastrointestinal issues. A family in Austin wanted to adopt her, and I was supposed to be her transport to her new family.
But the moment I picked her up, I knew something was wrong.
Princess wasn?t just a kitty with a little stomach trouble. She was very sick.
Her bowels were severely backed up, and she was leaking stool onto herself because she couldn't control it. Instead of taking her to the adopters as planned, I took her straight to a veterinarian.
I was told she should be euthanized.
But when I looked at Princess, I didn't see a cat who was ready to die.
I saw a sweet little girl who needed someone to keep looking for an answer.
So I did.
I called vets. I searched for options. I kept asking questions. I refused to accept that death was the only answer simply because her case was complicated.
Finally, Monday came.
I got Princess to a holistic veterinarian who was willing to take another approach. They put her into surgery.
And today, Princess is recovering. She is walking, eating, and going to the bathroom on her own.
Think about that for a moment.
Imagine losing your life because you were constipated.
Because your medical needs were complicated. Because treating you required more time, money, patience, or creativity. Because somewhere along the way, someone decided your life wasn't worth the effort.
Princess is one of the sweetest cats I have ever met. Her illness didn't make her less deserving of love. Her medical needs didn't make her disposable.
Princess isn't the first special-needs cat who has found her way into my life. I've loved and cared for animals with disabilities, chronic conditions, FIV, neurological disorders, scaredy-cats, trauma, and I'm sure I'm missing something.
They have taught me something I wish more people understood:
Different does not mean broken.
Special needs does not mean unwanted.
A difficult diagnosis does not make a life less valuable.
That is what None Left Behind represents.
Team Princess represents the little girl who turned a lifetime of loving the overlooked into a mission I want to share with the world.
We want to advocate for the cats who need a little more. The ones passed over & euthanized because they're sick, disabled, FIV+, elderly, injured, scared, or simply considered inconvenient.
We want people to see what we see:
A life worth fighting for.
Princess got another chance because someone said, not yet. Let's keep trying.
We have a ways to go- but we are doing it. We are fighting together
There are thousands of other cats waiting for someone to say the same thing.
None Left Behind. ?
Every cat deserves a chance.
