After eight years as a State Parks Ranger, Pat Freeling joined the Department of Fish and Game in 2008, where he served as a Game Warden in Mendocino County for 16 years until his retirement in 2024. Throughout his career, Pat was known for his tireless work ethic in the field and the respect he earned from the community he served.
While he made countless deer and abalone poaching cases, it was Pat?s investigation into a large-scale, transnational succulent poaching ring operating out of the North Coast that brought him international recognition. His dedication to uncovering this emerging threat led to additional cases across the state, contributed to the passage of Assembly Bill 223, inspired the award-winning film Plant Heist, and earned him numerous honors from multiple organizations.
Pat retired in 2024 with plans to travel the world with his wife, Linda, and their son, Cole. Just months into retirement, he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. After two surgeries in the past year and a half, Pat has remained strong and courageous as he continues his fight.
The back logo reads ?Memento Mori; Amor Fati,? which roughly translates to ?Remember death; love of fate.? By acknowledging the inevitability of death (Memento Mori) and embracing every aspect of life?both good and bad (Amor Fati)?we can lessen fear, find contentment, and live more fully in the present.
This is a philosophy Pat has embraced and lived by since receiving his diagnosis. This campaign is our opportunity to show our support and appreciation for him during this difficult time.
All proceeds will be donated to the Glioblastoma Foundation. (glioblastomafoundation.org). You can also donate to CalWOF and ALL proceeds will go to Pat and his Family.
