The Port Chester Historical Society is a group of people who want to preserve the history as well as the historic places and personalities of our community. We work to increase the understanding of our history in all its complexity and to stir the imaginations of local students and people of all ages. Most of all, we strive to inspire a love of learning about local history.
Our motto is: UNCOVER, SHARE, CELEBRATE!
Our recent projects include creating a ?digital twin? of the Bush Lyon Homestead so that people around the world will be able to ?walk? through the building. The Bush Lyon Homestead dates from approximately 1760 and has additions from later decades - now local teachers will be able to integrate the scan into their lessons so students can see a colonial chimney in detail without having to crawl through a dusty attic!
We host events over the course of the year to serve and educate our community - with some fun thrown in! WinterFest includes tours of the Homestead, highlights about how earlier Americans celebrated holidays, and foods [mostly desserts] from around the world to reflect Port Chester?s long history of being an immigrant community. Juneteenth is our opportunity to celebrate freedom and showcase who had freedom denied to them. Indigenous People?s Day and Columbus Day are when we look at our area both pre- and post-colonization.
