Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in Red Lodge, Montana, with a mission to provide lifelong sanctuary to non-releasable wildlife native to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem while sharing a message of education and conservation.
Each year, YWS celebrates International Raccoon Appreciation Day to shine a spotlight on these intelligent and adaptable animals, including our two resident raccoons, Cooper and Meeka.
Cooper was kept as a pet when he was young and became too habituated to humans to be released into the wild. He eventually found a permanent home at YWS alongside Meeka. Meeka came to the Sanctuary after being hit by a car and suffering a severe injury to her right hind leg. Despite rehabilitation efforts, her leg ultimately had to be amputated.
If you look closely at the artwork on this shirt, you?ll notice that the raccoon on the right has only three legs. That raccoon represents Meeka!
Raccoons sometimes get a bad reputation for getting into garbage, gardens, and other places we would rather they stay out of. But their curiosity and problem-solving skills are part of what make them such remarkable animals. Raccoons are highly intelligent, adaptable, and important members of the ecosystems they call home. Learning more about them can help us better appreciate these clever neighbors and understand how we can share our communities with wildlife.
