For years, ?there is no ethical consumption under capitalism? has been a familiar refrain on the American progressives: what we buy has consequences, and cheap goods can conceal exploitation and suffering somewhere else in the world.

Russian oil is no abstraction.

Every barrel purchased from Russia sends money into an economy sustaining a war of aggression against Ukraine. And yet some of the same voices most skeptical of complicity through consumption also oppose using America?s economic leverage to make Russian oil harder to buy.

We don?t support tariffs because we love tariffs. We support them because Russia has to be stopped.

H.R. 10076, the Graham Sanctioning Russia Act, would impose tariffs on imports from countries that continue purchasing Russian oil. The point isn?t protectionism for its own sake. It?s to create a real economic choice: help finance Russia?s war, or retain normal access to the American market.

The principle should be one we can all agree on: There is no ethical consumption of Russian oil.
