"To the memory of fellow Japanese Immigrants who, although ushered to this place with the breaking of friendly relations between the two countries, have come to enjoy this quiet, peaceful place." - Dedication from designer, Kuichiro Nishi
This design honors Manzanar's Rose Park (also known as Pleasure Park or Merritt Park) designed by Kuichiro Nishi in 1943. The foot bridge, which connects the pond to the rest of the garden, is a striking feature from the park seen in the many photographs from Manzanar. The bridge is woven together more like fabric than wood, to represent the way we are intertwined with our ancestors. The bridge also represents transition, reinforced by the swirls below and above that suggest the journey of arriving and departing.
Each mon was designed in collaboration with Massachusetts-based artist, Brittany Arita.
