But history teaches us that these things rarely arrive all at once. They arrive quietly. Wrapped in patriotism. Wrapped in religion. Wrapped in the promise of safety. Wrapped in the language of "us versus them."

That's why we read.

We read to recognize the warning signs.

We read to challenge our assumptions.

We read to expand our empathy.

We read because an informed people are harder to manipulate and a compassionate people are harder to divide.
