The word iiyaaG is the original dAXunhyuuga? name from which the Anglicized word ?Eyak? was derived. More than a translation, it embodies the connection between language, place, and identity. Through this single word, the Eyak people rooted their sense of belonging to the land and waters that sustained them for countless generations.

iiyaaG refers to the confluence where Eyak Lake meets Eyak River, the ?throat of the lake.? This place is not only a natural landmark but also a cultural and spiritual nexus. It has long been a gathering space for food, ceremony, and community, where salmon return each year in abundance and where stories, songs, and teachings were passed down.

iiyaaG is one of the historic Eyak village sites, a place where families lived, fished, and carried forward traditions of survival and kinship. These lands and waters hold the memory of the Eyak ancestors and remain a touchstone for cultural continuity. Yet, iiyaaG was more than a village site, it was a gather place. Here, neighboring peoples came together, drawn by the safety of its harbor and the abundance of its waters. They sought shelter, exchanged goods and knowledge, and shared the foods provided by salmon, game, and forest. At iiyaaG, alliances were forged, friendships renewed, and lifeways interwoven. It was a place where Eyak hospitality welcomed others, where abundance was shared, and where being Eyak meant not only belonging to this land but being connected to a greater circle of relations.

Today, the Native Village of Eyak (NVE) carries forward this heritage. While NVE is unique in that it represents a multi-tribal people; Eyak, Sugpiaq, Tlingit, and Athabascan. It is upon the homelands of the Eyak that NVE stands, its foundation woven into the spirit of this place. The name iiyaaG calls us back, reminding us that even as the Village embraces many lineages and peoples, its deepest roots remain with the Eyak, with their language, and with the land and waters that shaped them.

To honor iiyaaG is to remember who we are. It is more than a place, more than a name, it is the spirit of being Eyak. For the Native Village of Eyak, iiyaaG is both root and reminder: that even as we stand today as a Tribe woven with many Alaska Native peoples, our heart remains with the Eyak, with this land, and with the language that first named it.
