? A BIG MILES UPDATE! ?
Miles will be undergoing Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery on September 18th! New Orleans finally has a surgeon at Ochsner Health that fellowship trained under the pioneer of this life changing surgery.
Miles? cerebral palsy causes spasticity, which makes his muscles tight and movement much harder. We?ve tried daily medication, therapy, braces, Botox, nerve blocks, and countless hours of hard work, but spasticity continues to be one of his biggest obstacles.
SDR is a neurosurgical procedure that permanently reduces the abnormal nerve signals causing his spasticity. The goal is to give Miles? muscles and nervous system less resistance so he can focus on building strength, improving his movement, and becoming more independent.
We feel incredibly lucky that Miles is a great candidate for SDR, because not every child qualifies. After months of research, questions, appointments, and conversations with his doctors and therapists, we truly believe this is the best path forward for him.
And while we?re hopeful about what this could mean for his future, we know the surgery is only the beginning. Recovery will involve a LOT of therapy, hard work, and learning to use his body in new ways.
We?re excited, nervous, hopeful, and emotional all at once but mostly we?re ready to give our boy the best opportunity we can.
Please keep Miles, his surgical team, his therapists, and our family in your prayers as we head into this next chapter.
