Conventional and GMO agriculture, with their reliance on toxic synthetic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers and other chemical toxins, are destroying the health of our soil worldwide. The conversation about soil must become front-and-center. We need to begin regenerating the health of our soil if we're to have the most healthy, nutritious foods nature can produce. According to many experts, improving soil health is one of the best ways to tackle our climate problems, as soil has the ability to hold carbon. Regenerative organic practices lead to soil that can sequester more carbon. Healthy soil also absorbs and stores more water, preventing runoff, flooding, and allowing plants to survive longer in drought conditions. A healthy Soil Food Web is vital for a healthy Earth.
The Soil Food Web describes the complex system of organisms in the soil and how it interacts with the environment, plants, and animals. An incredibly diverse community of organisms live all or part of their lives in the soil. They range in size from the tiniest one-celled bacteria, algae, fungi, and protozoa, to the more complex nematodes and micro-arthropods, to the visible earthworms, insects, small vertebrates, and plants. As these organisms eat, grow, and move through the soil, they make it possible for us to have to have healthy plants, clean water, clean air, and moderated water flow.
Ants, birds, earthworms, centipedes, mushrooms, mycorrhizal fungi rhizosphere, nematodes, bacteria, protozoa, and more, all play synergistic roles in a healthy Soil Food Web, which in turn gives us healthy, nutritious food.
Your t-shirt purchase will support our continuing efforts to educate the public about the importance of The Soil Food Web and healthy soil throughout the year.
