The Uptown Film Center (a 501c3) has launched its "Fill the House" campaign, raising funds to transform the long-abandoned, gutted former Metro Theater on Manhattan's Upper West Side (Bway & 99th) into a vibrant cultural hub, bringing multigenerational and multicultural communities together through independent cinema, education, and shared storytelling experiences. As legendary film critic Roger Ebert profoundly noted, ?Movies are empathy machines,? capable of transporting us into the lives and experiences of others.
Once completed, the Uptown Film Center will be the only full-time, nonprofit independent film destination north of 72nd Street. This new cultural institution will act as an anchor for neighborhood revitalization, while bridging divides through the power of cinema and ensuring that film remains accessible, inclusive, and essential to community life.
