Wood turtles are found in my home state of NH and like so many others, their numbers are declining. I can remember being a young kid, walking along a small brook with my father and seeing a wood turtle on the bottom. 

Seeing that turtle where it belonged showed me just how perfect and adapted it is for its habitat. The yellow markings on the carapace mimicking light going through moving water, the texture on the shell like the texture and color of the rocks.
